Louis Vuitton’s iconic Monogram collection introduced the new Papillon Trunk bag for Fall/Winter 2021. The legendary 1960s Papillon travel bag has been reimagined as a compact, semi-structured baguette bag, featuring S-Lock closure, LV-embossed trunk detailing and studs that pay homage to the brand’s luggage-making heritage.
Design Inspiration
The original Papillon travel bag was created in 1966 by Henry Racamier, husband of Odile Vuitton from the fourth generation of the Vuitton family. “Papillon” means “butterfly” in French, inspired by the bag’s two handles that resemble butterfly wings when extended.

The Papillon quickly became a favorite, appearing frequently in the 1960s TV series “Bewitched” and undergoing numerous updates and reissues over the decades. It has featured in collaborations with artists like Takashi Murakami and Yayoi Kusama, with vintage versions remaining highly sought-after in the secondary market.

The new Papillon Trunk maintains the original’s cylindrical silhouette with structured sides that hold their shape while offering ample storage. The dual handles have been replaced with a detachable chain strap + wide shoulder strap combination for a more contemporary look.
Craftsmanship

True to its “Trunk” name, the bag incorporates signature luggage elements – the S-lock clasp is inspired by Louis Vuitton’s 1886 “Tumbler” locking system that used customized keys for all of a customer’s trunks.

The clasp opens easily with one hand – simply push the two buttons toward the center until the triangular metal piece clicks open.

The body is crafted from Monogram canvas for lightweight durability, with calf leather trim featuring embossed LV logos and metal studs that reinforce the traditional trunk-making techniques.

Styling Options
The bag comes with a 55cm metal chain and adjustable wide strap, both detachable via side rings, allowing transformation between clutch, hand-carry, shoulder bag, and crossbody styles. This versatility gives the classic design contemporary appeal.

Capacity
Despite its compact cylindrical shape, the Papillon Trunk is surprisingly spacious, easily accommodating thicker items like pressed powder compacts while maintaining a streamlined silhouette.
The suede-lined interior protects contents from scratches, with reinforced leather edges that help the bag maintain its structure.Louis Vuitton Papillon Trunk Handbag
