The Iconic Gucci Bamboo 1947 Bag Makes a Comeback
Gucci’s first classic handbag, the Bamboo 1947, made a triumphant return in the Fall/Winter 2021 collection. Maintaining its signature bamboo handle and curved saddle silhouette, this season introduces the design in a mini size with candy-colored options, plus two interchangeable and detachable straps that reinterpret the classic shape with contemporary flair.

Design Inspiration

The original Gucci bamboo bag was born in 1947 when postwar Europe was still under rationing and materials were scarce. Florentine craftsmen, under founder Guccio Gucci’s direction, innovated by importing lightweight yet durable bamboo from Japan to create the bag’s handle.

In 1958, Gucci patented the bamboo bag. Over decades, the bamboo handle transcended its utilitarian origins to become an iconic brand symbol, gracing the arms of Hollywood stars and international celebrities as a timeless style statement.

Craftsmanship
Each bamboo handle undergoes over a dozen meticulous steps: heating to bend into shape, coloring with natural beeswax and lacquer, then reheating to create the characteristic scorch marks.

Bamboo handle production process
The bamboo handle and lock give this bag its classic charm and Eastern aesthetic. Combined with bamboo’s natural variations and complex craftsmanship, each bag is truly unique.

How to Wear It
The new Bamboo 1947 features two interchangeable straps: one in matching leather and another in Gucci’s signature red-and-green web stripe. Attached with metal clasps, they offer versatile styling options.

What Fits Inside
Available in medium, small and mini sizes, we’re featuring the most compact mini version (17×12×7.5cm) – a playful take on the original that’s perfect for petite frames.

The beige linen lining is lightweight and scratch-resistant, with a back card slot. We fit an iPhone X, compact mirror, tissues, lipstick, perfume and AirPods – everything you need for a day out.

Styling the Bamboo Bag
Drawing from history while making history, the Gucci Bamboo 1947 reinterprets a classic with contemporary vision. Its natural bamboo poetry and equestrian spirit make it equally stunning with elegant dresses or tailored suits.
