· Suna Fujita Ceramic Studio ·

LOEWE’s 2023 holiday collection collaborates with Kyoto-based ceramic studio Suna Fujita, bringing the artist’s whimsical creatures and dreamy landscapes to life on bags and accessories.
Suna Fujita Ceramic Studio was founded in 2005 by Japanese ceramic artists Shohei Fujita and Chisato Yamano in rural Kyoto. Their work draws inspiration from nature, childhood memories, dreams, and life with their son and dog, resembling three-dimensional storybooks carved onto ceramic pieces.
Ceramics endure through time. Even when broken into fragments, the patterns on their surfaces help us understand cultures and lifestyles, becoming media that carry our life stories. We aim to create a dreamlike, nearly utopian world that offers people moments of tranquility.

· Leather Marquetry ·
The bag features an Eastern-inspired “Bottle Green” background adorned with leather marquetry and hand-painted panda 🐼 and bamboo 🎋 motifs, creating playful scenes that bring smiles.

LOEWE doesn’t simply print patterns on bags but uses leather marquetry to embed designs into the leather, with hand-stitched edges creating dimensional, layered visual effects.

LOEWE began using leather marquetry in 2016. The process involves laser-cutting leather pieces of different colors and textures, which artisans then assemble like a puzzle, ensuring uniform thickness for seamless integration.

Opening the bag reveals more surprises – playful pandas tumbling across the canvas lining, along with special edition Suna and butterfly printed leather tags.

· The Puzzle Bag ·

The Puzzle bag was Creative Director Jonathan Anderson’s first handbag design for LOEWE, debuting in the 2015 Spring/Summer menswear show. Inspired by jigsaw puzzles, it combines geometric leather pieces into three-dimensional forms, balancing LOEWE’s craftsmanship heritage with avant-garde aesthetics.

I tried to find a new way to make a bag – to fundamentally deconstruct it. To take the traditional bag apart to create a flat object that has three-dimensional function.

Each Puzzle bag comprises over 90 components, with leather cut into precisely calculated geometric shapes via hand or laser cutting. After edge-painting, gluing, stitching, and shaping through 524 steps, even master craftsmen with 50 years’ experience require at least 10 hours to complete one.

The new Puzzle bag features softer satin calfskin and simplified stitching compared to the classic version, with single topstitching replacing double stitching. The edges appear folded rather than angular, reducing weight while maintaining structure.

· Carrying Options ·
True to its name, the Puzzle bag offers versatile carrying options – shoulder, crossbody, handheld, or clutch – with its flexible structure folding into multiple configurations.

The bag includes short handles and a detachable, adjustable leather strap to accommodate different styles and body types.

· What Fits Inside ·
Despite its mini size, the Puzzle bag offers surprising capacity. The fully lined interior features matching panda-print canvas that complements the exterior design.

We tested the bag with a notebook, tissues, iPhone, key pouch, perfume, lipstick, and book – the 250g weight makes it effortlessly practical for daily use.
