Saint Laurent’s 2023 Spring-Summer Men’s Collection introduces the innovative Take-Away Box Bag, crafted from Monogram embossed calfskin to mimic a folded paper takeout container. The sleek black body is accentuated by vintage silver YSL metal insignia, creating a design that’s both novel and whimsical.
The Takeout Box Design
True to its name, the Take-Away Box draws inspiration from common takeout containers. Constructed from rigid calfskin leather, it features a precise gable box shape with authentic details like cut-out handles and sliding clasp closures. The bottom envelope structure replicates the folded construction of paper boxes.
The top resembles a slanted roof, opening similarly to a McDonald’s Happy Meal box – simply push the handle downward and release the side clasps. The supple calfskin allows wide-angle opening for easy access to contents.
Monogram Embossed Leather
The bag features YSL Monogram embossed calfskin, with raised YSL logos and diamond-quilted patterns pressed into the leather for a textured, luminous finish.
Saint Laurent introduced its updated Monogram collection in Fall-Winter 2020, featuring the classic YSL insignia and diamond quilting with alternating upside-down YSL logos and occasional “PARIS” lettering at pattern intersections, paying homage to the brand’s origins.
The Iconic YSL Logo
The prominent silver YSL metal logo stands out dramatically against the black background. Designed in 1961 by French artist A.M. Cassandre at founder Yves Saint Laurent’s request, the vertically arranged initials resemble a sensual, elegant woman – perfectly matching the brand’s aesthetic.
This logo has become YSL’s unmistakable signature element. The Monogram collection, featuring this design, quickly became the brand’s most popular IT Bag after its 2013 debut.
The striking black-and-silver color scheme creates a cool, edgy style that contrasts playfully with the takeout box concept, resulting in understated luxury.
What Fits Inside?
Measuring 19×21×10cm (7.5×8.3×4 inches), this lightweight bag offers unisex appeal. It comes without an additional shoulder strap, maintaining the authentic takeout box handheld style.
We tested the bag with an iPhone, wallet, keys, compact, lipstick, perfume, earbuds, notebook, and tissues – filling only about half the space. This spacious “takeout box” could easily accommodate a small cake or sandwich.
