LOEWE’s Okra Glazed Hammock Bag: A Tribute to Chinese Monochrome Porcelain

The exquisite Okra Green Hammock Bag from LOEWE’s 2023 Pre-Spring “Chinese Monochrome Glaze” collection draws inspiration from the single-color porcelain of China’s Ming and Qing dynasties. Crafted from delicate okra green satin calfskin and adorned with a playful ceramic rabbit charm, this piece reinterprets classical aesthetics through a contemporary lens.

Inspiration from Chinese Monochrome Glazes

Monochrome glaze, also known as “single-color glaze” or “plain glaze,” refers to ceramics that display a uniform color achieved through specific chemical compositions in the glaze. This art form flourished during China’s Song Dynasty and reached its zenith in the Qing Dynasty under emperors Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong.

LOEWE Creative Director Jonathan Anderson found inspiration in the minimalist beauty of Chinese monochrome ceramics, creating a collection of pure-colored bags that pay homage to traditional Chinese aesthetics through contemporary design language.

“During my travels in China, I was immediately captivated by monochrome glazes. Chinese monochrome ceramics have profoundly influenced global ceramic art throughout history and continue to inspire contemporary artists today.”

The Hammock Bag Design

First introduced in LOEWE’s 2016 Spring/Summer collection, the Hammock bag takes inspiration from the structure of actual hammocks. Jonathan Anderson incorporated the curved silhouette, side ties, and flexible folding capability into the design, creating a versatile bag that transforms effortlessly between different styles.
